Chapter Twelve

SARAH

I was so thankful when Gemma brought out lunch. The kids were starving, and it gave me a diversion when faced with dealing with Mr. Greyson’s family.

“This is so lovely Mrs. Greyson, don’t you think? Look at the lovely fresh fruit and these sandwiches, Gemma is a godsend.”

My comment wasn’t as delightedly received. “Yes, well, it is her occupation. If she didn't do it well I imagine my son would have fired her a long time ago. She’s been an employee for a long time, after her mother retired. Their family is closely connected to ours, serving us that is.”

It appalled me how Mr. Greysons’ mother spoke of the hired help. I knew it was a product of her station in life but it didn't hurt to have manners and moral character to still be considerate of those in your employ.

It was then I understood how Mr. Greyson could treat me and the rest of his staff at the office the way he did; it was his breeding and lack of being taught proper character skills. I only hoped some of his father’s wisdom, kindness and playful attitude trickled down to him.

“Maybe so but it doesn't hurt to be kind and decent.” I smothered a roll with butter and broke it in half for my two kids, then thought about Scarlett. She'd slept quite a while and if I didn't wake her soon, she would be up all night. “Will you all excuse me for a moment?”

I made my way to her bedroom and found her awake, trying to get out of her crib. “Goodness, dearest, don’t do that.” Relieved I’d arrived in time I scooped her up, changed her and brought her downstairs for some outside and social time. I set her in the grass on a blanket with some toys I collected along the way.

“Oh my! You shouldn’t do that. She belongs inside where it’s safe and not dirty.” Mr. Greyson’s mother looked disgusted.

No one was going to tell me how to raise my kids. “She’s fine, I know it might seem strange but exposure to sunlight, fresh air, and the outside is good for a baby's health.”

Isaac was bored at this point. He’d finished his food and was ready to find something to do. Bored, he started waving a piece of paper he’d found, around. “Look mom, it's a flag.” He giggled then started folding it into an airplane, which he then launched.

It didn't go far, and landed in Mr. Greyson’s mother’s hair and stuck. Lily laughed, I held back my laughter but heard her husband laughing but didn't dare glance his way. “Isaac, you must be careful not to do that at the table. You could take out someone’s eye.”

At this point Mr. Greyson’s mother didn't even blink, apparently the kids were doing her some good too. She merely stared at me, and I could see dislike behind those calm eyes.

When Isaac went around the table to remove it I was certain she would lose her mind since his fingers were sticky and wet from the fruit he’d just shoved into his mouth.
